It is with deep regret that we have to announce the recent passing of Malcolm Dilloway CPAGB early on Friday 12th December 2014 after a long illness. Malcolm had been an active member of Reflex photographic club for many years, not only as an accomplished photographer but also as Chairman and active committee member. Malcolm was also an accredited judge through the KCPA and has even judged some of Reflex Photographic Clubs competitions. Malcolm will be greatly missed at the club and our thoughts go out to his family and friends as this sad time. For those members who wish to pay their respects, Malcolm’s funeral will be on 8th…

    Studio Lighting evening

The last Reflex Photographic club meeting was a great success. Long-standing club member and founder, Vic Cassar, gave a practical demonstration of the use of studio flash light set-up. Vic explained how the studio lights could be set up for the most appropriate lighting of our table top models (more on these later) and explained how to set the most appropriate shutter speed and aperture for the lighting available. After this, members were encouraged to try their hand at photographing the desk top set-ups using their own cameras; with the help of Vic’s guiding hand. We also had a “constant lighting” set up so that members could get the feel…

    Panel Competition

On Thursday 16th October the reflex photographic club held their second Print Panel Competition. The entry of 12 Panels from 7 photographers was judged by Chris Shore FRPS, MPAGB, EFIAP BPE5* and Helen Taylor ARPS, DPAGB, BPE3*. The judges gave a very interesting and informative critique of all the panels; not just commenting on individual images within a panel but also providing thoughtful comments on the layout of the panels. Chris and Helen judging a panel entry.   After some deliberation and tea the judges commended 2 panels and awarded a 1st, 2nd and third place. The judges were particularly impressed with the print quality of John Brown’s entry “Water…

    “How the camera works”

On Thursday 18th September our second night of the season was dedicated to “how the camera works”. Unfortunately, Vic was unable to give his prepared talk due to ill health (although I am glad to say, he is now in better health). Fortunately Tony Mitchell was able to step in with an interactive demonstration of the basics of camera operation. Tony’s lecture covered the basics of how the human eye and brain see (perceive) our surroundings and how this can be translated into an understanding of how a camera works. The topics covered aperture, shutter speed and ISO. The effects these 3 factors have on an image were demonstrated with…

Opening night and discovery day challenge

Thursday 4th September was the first night of the 2014-15 season. It was nice to see so many new faces as well as returning members. The evening started with a power-point presentation explaining the forthcoming season including competition rules and explanations. Although there were some “power-point malfunctions” (i.e. errors) the more established members were always at hand to help explain the club rules and regulations. After our usual tea break (including sandwiches) we spent time viewing some of the inspirational images from last season’s authors. The feedback from the evening was very encouraging with several of the new members offering advice on future evenings and events – definite food for…

    NEW MEMBERS!

Thank you to all our visitors to the exhibition today (Saturday 12th July 2014) and a special “thank you” to those who signed up for a year’s membership. I was most impressed with the enthusiasm and passion for photography that is out there. We had a huge range of visitors. Some totally inexperienced and some people who had been involved in photography for some time. We had at least one professional photographer who said worked for the Daily Mail and was most impressed with the quality our photographs. He commented favourably on the deck-chairs picture “Windy Day” by Ignatius and on Derek’s picture “Elevated Walkway-Edingburh”.  We had numerous visitors from…
